Doodle Colorwork Headband Class
In this class we will make a headband from The Doodle Knit Dictionary by Jamie Lomax while learning fair isle knitting. Fair isle knitting is a type of stranded colorwork in which no more than two colors are knit in a single round. Colorwork techniques can open up your knitting world to a whole new array of artistic expression whether it be traditional fair isle XO repeats and peeries; Nordic, Scandinavian, Greek, or Peruvian motifs; or contemporary designs that conjure up nostalgia for your favorite 16-bit video game sprites!
Skills we will focus on in this class:
- Making and blocking gauge swatches in the round
- Making a swatch ruler and learning how to read a gauge swatch
- Color dominance in Fair Isle knitting
- Even tension so that designs avoid “puckering”
- Catching floats
- Laddering down to correct errors
Skill level: Advanced beginner

Prerequisites:
- Comfortable knitting stockinette with consistent tension
- Ability to knit in the roundespecially at small circumferences
- Experience knitting both continental and English styles, or be willing to learn during the class. This class will feature two-handed knitting
Materials (yarn, needles and notions are available at The Knitting Tree LA at a 10% discount):
- Yarn – Any DK, light worsted, or sport weight (4 ply) yarn. For child sizes, you will need approx. 75-160 yds total. For adult sizes, you will need approx. 180-220 yds total. The number of yarns you’ll need and the amount per color will depend on which doodles you choose to knit.
- Recommended: solid colors that show high contrast when photographed under a B&W or Grayscale filter or a variegated/ombre and two solids that do not share colors. If you have questions about color selection, bring all the colors you’re considering and we will discuss during first class session.
- Needles – US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles (16” or 24”) or US 5 (3.75 mm) DPNs.
- Crochet Hook - F/5 (3.75 mm), E/4 (3.5 mm), or D/3 (3.25 mm)
- Pattern – Doodle Headband “Recipe” found in The Doodle Knit Dictionary by Jamie Lomax.
- Notions – Scissors, darning/tapestry needle, stitch markers, tape measure, blocking mat, blocking pins.
- Other items - A sheet of scrap paer and pen for making a swatch ruler
Other notes:
- Its highly encouraged that attendees come prepared to take notes
- For the first day of class make sure to bring the book and the yarn you want to use or are considering using
- We will be wet blocking a swatch between class days 1 and 2. It will be helpful if you have your own blocking equipment
